Sensible Soccer in Higher Education

Today Sensible Soccer, Chairman and current Central Coast Mariners Sporting Director Mike Phelan delivered a higher education masterclass at UCFB to year 3 Football Coaching and Management and Football Business and Coaching Undergraduate students.

UCFB Lecturers Tom Wenham and David Horrocks are the module leaders for the two respective degrees and commented “This really brings to life the students studies, adds practicality to the theoretical Journal Articles we have studied this week and gives our students a real shot in the arm as they work towards assignment one (Designing and Evaluating a Coaching Intervention)”

The day opened up with discussion on the elite performance culture and environment with a Q and A focussed around The Manchester United Years, Sir Alex Fergusons working practices, and the handling of elite players such as Ronaldo, Rooney, Scholes and Berbatov to name but a few.

Students then got involved in a hands on day in the life of a Premier League Football Club and the evaluation and preparation with regard to a past and future FA Premier League fixture.

Scenarios were evaluated using actual Premier League footage and tasks were set such as, how would you analyse and reflect on a game? then how would you coach going into the next game and why?

The icing on the cake was the students then being taken onto the full size pitch at Belle Vue and taking part in a real life Premier League football training session.

UCFB Programme Leader and England Lacrosse Head Coach Tom Wenham commented “What a great and unique experience for the boys and it was amazing to see the coaching process unfold and the performance of the boys improve before our very eyes over the 45 minutes. Fascinating to be able to observe one of the world’s greatest coaches in action at such close quarters and what a unique experience this was for all concerned and a day these budding young coaches won’t forget in a long time.”

This year the students are working towards a level 6 understanding of holistic coaching, elite environments and interventions in elite level football. Many also pressed Mike with regard to their impending dissertations and a broad range of topics were raised and discussed in what all in all proved to be an invaluable day of curriculum enrichment.
