Sensible Soccer Chairman and Central Coast Mariners Sporting Director Mike Phelan featured in a podcast this week with Josh SchneiderWeiler of www.thisfootballlife.com

Arguably Mikes’ most revealing to date since he left Manchester United topics discussed ranged across his playing, coaching and operational roles within the club and also touched on the role of Sporting Director and recent business ventures.

His playing and coaching days were touched on and how he was responsible for the psychological mentoring and understanding of many of Sir Alex Fergusons signings. How his former career as a player gave him an added edge when educating new recruits in the demands, customs and pressures of being a Manchester United player.

Paul Scholes arguably being his favourite pupil and what coaching such a fantastic talent looks like.

His own playing days and a chance chat with Burnley FC legend Jimmy McIlroy being a springboard to furthering a promising football career and reaching the top of his game.

The role of The Sporting Director and how business, community and ultimately people are an important cornerstone and stakeholder in any successful football club operation.

His relationship with Sir Alex and how other staff saw Mike as having a special relationship with the great man including anecdotes on his license for autonomy, creativity, decision making authority, humour and the extended role Sir Alex gave him and the associated processes and responsibilities the job entailed.

The pressures of 3 Champions League finals, how nerves and anxiety may manifest and how to deal with and perform in such high pressure environments.
