Former Manchester United Ace Appointed ‘Down Under'

Mike Phelan, former player and Assistant Manager of Manchester United has taken up a role as Consultant Sporting Director with Australian A League football team, Central Coast Mariners.


The role will involve improving club operations including; first team, academy, recruitment, sports science, performance analysis and the wider area of football best practice, in what is an ever growing and fast moving industry.


Phelan, who has worked day-to-day with world class players such as Christiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs, has won 27 major honours in his career at all levels of the game in England and across Europe with the likes of Burnley, Norwich, Manchester United and Hull City.


“I’m excited! I’ve had a quite a few opportunities these last six months but I’ve been holding out for something new and challenging to attract me back into the game. Central Coast Mariners football club and their owner understand the long term process and the wider remit of modern professional football operations. I’m looking forward to making a really positive impact” said Phelan after returning from his first visit.


Central Coast mariners are based in Gosford on the central coast of New South Wales and compete in The A League. Their positive philosophy and hunger for growth and development lured Phelan, who has worked alongside Sir Alex Ferguson as Assistant Manager for 6 years before becoming manager Hull City then taking a break from the game.


“I’ve been working in Europe on recruitment and the performance structure over the last four weeks and I will head out to Australia at the end of July.  They have a great team of players and staff and there’s a real  passion about the club, which I’ll be looking to add to and ignite even further”

The consultancy role involves spending blocks of time over the next season with the club to develop all aspects of football and performance both on and off the pitch.
