Improve your shooting at home, as Mike Phelan shares his advice on how to master that perfect strike!

Do you ever wonder how professional footballers make it look so easy? Well, most of the time!

Hitting a powerful shot does not require putting all your strength into it.

In fact, this will hinder the shot. What’s crucial is focusing on technique rather than power.

Start getting into good habits and practice striking the ball to achieve the right balance of power and accuracy with your shots.

Practice will allow you to learn how to perfect your technique, from the run-up to finishing, using these simple tips – AND YOU CAN DO THEM AT HOME!

1.   Moving Ball – Just about the only time a ball will be static if for set pieces such as; free kicks, corners and penalties. Practice how you’ll play.

2.   Angle of approach – Kick the ball out in front of you, try to get a 45 degree angle as you approach the ball then finish straight and square with the goal.

3.   Frame the goal – See the goal, picture where you your shot to go and then keep your eye on the ball.

4.   Non-Kicking Foot By The Ball – You’ll get maximum power when your non-kicking foot is by the ball when you shoot.

5.   Connection – Keep your head and shoulders over the ball and get good contact with your laces for optimum connection.

 6.   Follow-through – The aim is to hit right through the middle of the ball so the ball doesn’t spin in the air. You should always follow through and land on your shooting foot.

I hope these simple yet affective shooting tips help you master the complex art of shooting.

Some of the best strikers in the world still focus on these fundamentals when it comes to shooting, as these are the foundation of building on your skill as a striker.
